Visiting Neuschwanstein Castle: tours, tickets and practical tips

Neuschwanstein is the most photographed building in Germany, and on summer days the queue for its tours stretches down the hill. This unofficial guide collects the practical details in one place. Rules change with the season — always confirm the current conditions before travelling.

Tours and timed entry

The castle can only be seen on a guided tour of about 30 minutes. Entry is organised by timed slot, and the numbers per slot are limited, so booking ahead matters — especially from April to October. A combined ticket with the nearby Hohenschwangau Castle is available and works well as a full-day plan.

Getting up the hill

From the ticket centre in Hohenschwangau it is roughly a 30–40 minute uphill walk. Alternatives: a horse-drawn carriage for the final stretch, or the shuttle bus towards Marienbrücke in high season. Whatever you choose, wear sensible shoes — the paths are steep and can be icy from autumn onwards.

When to go

Early morning slots are the quietest. Late autumn and the winter months bring fewer people and often snow-covered views; July and August bring peak crowds and the longest waits. The castle is closed on some public holidays — check the calendar.

What to expect

Photography is not allowed inside the state rooms, and large bags go to the lockers at the base. The tour covers the two completed floors — roughly a dozen rooms of the originally planned two hundred — so read up on the intended designs before or after; the official museum in the ground floor building adds context.
