Marienbrücke and the best viewpoints around the castle

Nearly every postcard of Neuschwanstein is taken from one of a handful of places, and knowing them saves you both time and disappointment. Here is the unofficial field guide to the views.

Marienbrücke

The iron bridge across the Pöllat gorge, a few minutes above the castle, carries the name of Queen Marie — Ludwig II had it strengthened so that visitors could admire his building project from the best angle. It remains the classic photo spot: the castle with the alpine lake behind it. The bridge is pedestrian-only and closes in icy conditions; in busy seasons it is limited to short stays, so plan your shots quickly.

On the way up

The trail from Hohenschwangau climbs through forest switchbacks with three marked viewpoints of its own. The lower ones show the castle emerging through the trees — worth stopping at if the queue on the bridge is long. The shuttle bus follows a different route with its own overlook near the castle entrance.

Beyond the classics

If you have an extra hour, continue past the castle on the ridge towards Tegelberg: the alpine panorama unfolds in a direction most day-trippers never see. Sunset light on the facade comes from the valley side, which is why early evenings — not midday — give the warmest photographs.

Practical notes

  • Bring a strap for your phone on the bridge in wind; drones are not permitted.
  • Winter: the bridge and some trails close for ice — check the local notices that morning.
  • The gorge trail is steep — sturdy shoes matter more than camera gear.
